Contact Lens Glossary
1. disposable wear-means the contact lenses are for single use and must be discarded when removed from the eye and are not to be worn for more than a week.
2. daily disposable-means that the contact lenses are only supposed to be worn for one day and disposed of.
3. extended wear-means you can sleep in the contact lenses and they can be worn for up to a week before removal.
4. daily wear-means that the contact lenses should be taken out at bed time each day.
5. frequent replacement-means the contact lenses are reusable but discarded before they become bothersome.
6. gas permeable-a term that means that oxygen passes thru the contact lenses.
7. astigmatism-a type of visual condition that turns a spot of light into a streak.
8. toric lenses-a contact lens designed to correct an eye with astigmatism.
9. bifocal contacts-a contact lens that incorporates both a prescription for distance and for near.
10. monovision-a technique where one eye is corrected for distance vision and the other eye is corrected for near.
11. orthokeratology-a technique to reduce the amount of nearsightedness by using specially designed gas permeable contact lenses.
12. opaque lenses-contact lenses designed to block out your natural eye color by using a color in the contact lens that you can't see thru which causes a slight blur to one's peripheral vision.
13. special effect contacts-contact lenses designed to make the eyes look unusual or even bizarre.
14. hard contacts-contact lenses made of hard gas permeable plastic material.
