Contact Lenses
Contact lenses are made of a plastic material that can be either a gas permeble hard plastic material containing no water or a soft gas permeable plastic material that contains various amounts of water depending on the brand. Generally the more water in the contact lens the more comfortable they are to wear, but with that added comfort comes less durability. In other words the more water in the contact lenses the more comfortable, but the less water in the contact lenses the longer the contact lenses will last. Whereas the hard contact lenses generally last a matter of years, the soft contact lenses usually last a matter of months at best and some contact lenses lasting only a few days .
Contact lenses can now correct nearly every eye condition that eyeglasses can correct. Contact lenses can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia (bifocals). Contact lenses can even change your eye color and come with prescription or without for those with good vision. Some contact lenses come in daily wear, where you take them out at bedtime, and some as extended wear where in some cases you can leave them on for as long as 30 days without removal. There are even specialized hard gas permeable contact lenses that you sleep in, and they correct your vision overnight so that you can go without them during the day and see just fine. These contact lenses are used in place of Lazik surgery for those who don't want to be operated on or can't afford it.
Compared to most eyeglasses and Lasik surgery, contact lenses seem reasonably priced. The longer lasting hard contact lenses cost the most, and the soft contact lenses that only last a day or two cost the least. The former generally costing hundreds of dollars a pair, and the latter only a dollar or so a pair.
Although contact lenses require more upkeep than glasses, contact lenses increase in popularity each year. Probably because many people don't like wearing glasses, and so they wear contact lenses as an alternative.
