Toric Contact Lens
A toric contact lens is a specially designed contact lens to correct astigmatism which is a distortion of the vision in which a point of light is turned into a streak. Astigmatism comes mostly from an irregular curvature of the cornea where the horizontal meridian is flatter than the vertical meridian much like the side of a football lying on its side. This is called with the rule astigmatism. Many assume this is caused by the pressure of the lids against the eyes causing the vertical meridian to bend more. It is a common problem and over 90% of the population has this condition to some degree.
To correct this distortion a toric contact lens must be placed upon the eyes with the same distortion built in but in the opposite meridian, meaning that usually the horizontal meridian of the toric contact lens is now steeper or thinner than the vertical meridian. A Toric contact lens must align properly on the eyes and remain stabile to work properly. If the toric contact lens rotates at all it will not fully correct the astigmatism, and if it rocks on the eye the vision will be intermittent meaning it will be clear and the then blur and then clear up again with each blink. Because of these problems many feel that a toric contact lens should only be purchased from the prescriber.
Hard contact lenses usually don't have to be of a toric design unless the patient has a significant amount. Small amounts of astigmatism are naturally neutralized because of the hard contact lens ability to bridge over the smaller irregulaities. Larger amounts of astigmatism will usually best be corrected with a hard toric contact lens.
Although both 'Bausch and Lomb Optical Company' and 'Ciba vision' make a good toric contact lens for astigmatism at reasonable prices, we do not recommend buying them over the internet. We feel these contact lenses are too complicated and best purchased from your eye doctor so they can be checked on your eyes to be sure the contact lens is performing properly.
Because of their complexity, expect the fitting and the toric contact lens will cost a lot more than non-toric contact lens and to be thicker as well. It's the price you have to pay for tight eyelids.
