Soft Contact Lenses
Between hard and soft contact lenses, the soft contact lenses are by far the most popular for two main reasons. They cost less than hard contact lenses and they are generally more comfortable than hard contact lenses especially during the initial adjustment phase. With the added comfort unfortunately you must live with less durabulity. Hard contact lenses last years and soft contact lenses usually last a matter of months.
Because most hard contact lenses are fitted with the edges clearing the eye, dirt sometimes can get behind the contact lens which hurts and sometimes scratches the eye, whereas the soft contact lenses mold themselves to the eye's surface which makes it difficult for dirt to get behind. This molding also makes the soft contact lenses a little more secure on the eye.
Water in the lens is what makes a soft contact lens soft. Hard contact lenses have no water in them. Water has no tensile strength so the more water in the contact lens the less durable. Also the more water in the contact lens the more comfortable, so the manufacturers must find a balance. A low water contact lens is about 40% water and a high water contact lens is about 65% water. Somewhere in between the two is the area of better balance. The former is a little tougher and the latter is initially a little more comfortable.
Soft contact lenses being more flexible are better able to mold to the surface of the eye making them more comfortable and more stabile than hard contact lenses. When given the choice most people prefer the more comfortable contact lens which is the soft contact lens.
